"Freemasonry... a beautiful system of morality, veiled in allegory, and illustrated by symbols. The most ancient society in the World; its principles are based on pure morality, its ethics are the ethics of pure religion, its doctrines, the doctrines of brotherly love, and its sentiments, the sentiments of exalted benevolence. It encourages all that is good, kind, and charitable; and reproves all that is vicious, cruel, and oppressive." The above quote is the essence of Freemasonry. We are an organization made up of like-minded men who want to live by certain principles. To make good men better is the goal of Freemasonry. Brotherly love, relief, and truth are the tenets of a Mason. These and other virtues are promoted by using various emblems of the builders art. The man who presents himself as a candidate for admission to our fraternity will learn about these ideas through three degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason. These degrees are explained in a series of plays performed with the candidate as the central figure. "To be one, ask one"...any man desirous of becoming a Mason need only ask. The prospective member must be a man of good moral character and profess a belief in a Supreme Being. Freemasonry is a worldwide organization that unites men of every country, sect, and opinion, and conciliates true friendship among those who otherwise might have remained at a perpetual distance. In additon to making good men better, our fraternity supports two worthy causes; the widows and orphans of North Carolina. The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford and the Masonic and Eastern Star Home in Greensoro are the beneficiaries of the efforts of Masons in North Carolina.
